"What are stem cells and what are they used for?". April 24, 2001 http://health.howstuffworks.com/question621.htm (January 17, 2007)

After researching this website for more information on stem cell research, I have found out that there are four different types of stem cells. They are embryonic which are taken from human embryos, fetal which are taken from aborted fetus', umbilical-taken from umbilical cords, and adult- taken from adult stem cells. Stem cells have the capibility of becoming new types of cells such as bone, muscle, and cartilage cells. While embryonic and fetal cells can created a bigger variety of stem cells, adult cells do not.
The process of differentiation is mentioned in the site. It happens before they replant them. Scientists specialize the cells to preform a specific function.

Questions to be answered:
-Do the four different types of stem cells work better than one another?

Stem Cell Basics . In Stem Cell Information [World Wide Web site]. Bethesda, MD: National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2006 [cited Wednesday, January 17, 2007]http://stemcells.nih.gov/info/basics/defaultpage

Stem Cell Information

After researching a little bit more on my topic of stem cell research, I have found out some information about the topic. Although there is much more that is needed to be researched, the information I found is key. The website that I researched stem cells is provided by the National Institues of Health and is approved by the United States government. (http://stemcells.nih.gov/info/basics/defaultpage.asp) The site provides an introduction to stem cells, as well as, treating diseases, the president's policy on the issue, and more.

Stem cells are cells found in plants, animals, etc. which when divided form new cells, either remaining a stem cell or becoming a new cell with a "more specialized function." The abnormal growth of cells can cause cancer and sometimes birth defects. Scientists are trying to figure out a way to fix these medical issues, by using stem cells.

The website also includes information on President Bush's policy, since the idea of isolating and growing cells has been in effect since 1998.
~"The stem cells must have been derived from an embryo that was created for reproductive purposes and was no longer needed."
~"Informed consent must have been obtained for the donation of the embryo and that donation must not have involved financial inducements."(taken from website)

As I continue the process of researching stem cells, we will look further into the debate over the issue, and what doctors are wanting to use with the stem cells.
